It is great to be able to have the contact with people that we miss seeing in person......many, many years ago when I lived in Montreal and Detroit we didn't have the advantage of the Internet, emails, and low cost phone calls. I could phone home to my mother no more than once a year at a cost of about $60.00 for 5 minutes. Keeping in mind that $60.00 then was half a week's wages!
But now with Skype (and other similar communication packages) it makes living overseas so much more enjoyable as we are able to stay in touch with all our friends and family more often.
Even using a "phone card" is easy and so much cheaper!!
I think the big Telco's better pull up their socks and start to be more "in tune" with what the customer wants and needs. :-)
But my blog, emails and letter writing is still a major part of keeping in touch with my friends. I enjoy writing letters in particular and probably send about 10 a week.........no, not long hand, but using the computer and I can then file them in month order and before writing each letter I can check back on what I told them in my last letter.........another advantage with sending a letter is that I can embed a photo of what I am talking about. This especially comes in handy in sending letters to friends that do not have Internet access. But I do find that anyone, regardless of if they have email access or not, all enjoy receiving a 'real' letter.
I have a friend that is in 24 hour residential care (after a stroke last November) I write to him each week and in the 3 page letter I would place at least 3 or 4 photos.......this makes the letter far more interesting for him as he can visually 'see' what I am telling him. I enjoy writing to him as I know how much he appreciates them!

Uluru at sunset. Northern Territory, Australia (at 36,000 feet)

I took this photo at 36,000 feet as we flew over Uluru on Thursday May 24 2007.
These are the true colors seen.
It was an amazing sight ............. the sun setting on the rock was incredible.
I took this photo with my Sony Cybershot DSC-W1. (on zoom)
15 mins out of Melbourne
Originally uploaded by Leonefabre.
I had been in Melbourne for 6 days .... not long enough to visit everyone I wanted to.......but long enough to catch up on Doctors visits etc. This photo was taken just 15 mins after take-off from Tullarmarine Airport.
Flight QF 09 from Melbourne to Singapore, departed at 4.00pm on May 24 2007.
Headed west towards Ballarat and over to Adelaide before turning northwards to Uluru (Central Australia), then west across the coast south of Broome to Singapore.
Not exactly sure of the point at which this photo is taken, but can only assume it to be somewhere between Melbourne and Ballarat.

Blackwood is 81 klms from the city of Melbourne........on the way towards Daylesford.
A really beautiful area of Victoria!
Ice cream is served here in rectangular wedges between either 2 wafers or a large slice of multi-colored bread. I tried mango ice cream choosing it over flavors like red bean paste, seaweed, sweet corn etc. Lynne had a raspberry ice cream, I had the mango ice cream and John (the ever cautious John) had chocolate ice cream with wafers.!!
I have my friend (Lynne) staying here in Singapore with us for a week....so already we have been out exploring and EATING!!!
Yesterday (Friday) saw us in the Arab Quarter.......visiting the Mosque, The Mall, wandering in and out of all the little shops, having a Mango Smoothie and of course lunch.
Lunch was at the Alaturka Restaurant, Turkish & Mediterranean Restaurant, in Bussorah St, Singapore ...... The Kampong Glam area of Singapore.
You can see a sample of what we had here:
absolutely delish ........... but of course, could not possibly fit in a full dinner as well. So it was nice to just have a bowl of watercress soup then. :-)

My excuse is that I have spent a bit of time lately with my photography and trying to improve my skills in that area ........ if you would like to spend a half hour or so browsing thru some of the photos I have taken, then take a look at my Flickr site here:
The above is one of the mosaics I did over the weekend.
