yaaarrrgggghhhh.............

Window display, Austin, Texas. USA

The photo above is one of three that I took of a window display while wandering around Austin, Texas last week.

I have just put some of these photos up on the Flickr site:

The city advertizes itself as being "weird".......... and postcards, TShirts etc have "Keep Austin Weird" on them............and believe me, it is kinda weird!

Though probably I am more inclined to say it is a "city of contrasts".
Some of the homes in the hills surrounding Austin are worth up to 40 million (yep.....US dollars) and yet there are beggars on just about every street corner. Ot there are area's that are lovely and green and around the corner it is dry, dusty and dirty.
Such contrasts in every area of living, travelling, visiting or working in Austin.

The Fabre's are back on Singapore Soil ....

crossed over Cook Inlet, Alaska

Arrived back in Sing over the weekend after our whirlwind trip (of 2 weeks) of the US.
This photos was taken as we flew over Alaska, but to see the rest of the photos have a look at the Flickr Site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/leonefabre/sets/
Took a lot of aerial photos - well we were "in the air" for a total of 52.5 hours, so I guess you could say there was quite a bit of time availabe to take photos!!
Though must admit, there was a lot of area's with heavy cloud cover that just did not allow for any photo....let alone any good photo. But have managed to get a few good aerial shots of some of the US. The ones I do like are the Alaskan ones and the ones on arrival into San Francisco.
Enjoy!!

Janine's hike on Cape Woolamai

Cape Woolamai

Am in Austin, Texas and at the moment sitting in the 'business centre' of the hotel looking at Janines photos on her Flickr site:

I couldn't decide which of her Cape Woolamai photos was my favorite, they are all great.......but have chosen this one probably because I like the way the sun is just touching the waters edge!
She said it was a big walk, very cold, some showers to start but once it cleared it was a beautiful day.
Janines photos make me realise how much of Australia I am missing....... it is fantastic to be able to have the opportunity to travel and see and experience other places, cities, towns, food and people, but it sure will be nice when I can get back to Australia to re-experience the way of life, the people, the places, the beaches and the clean fresh air!

very strange photo indeed........and from the air even weirder!! Top left hand side of photo is a boat on way into harbour.

I know the quality of the photo is very poor...dirty windows also creating the little spots....but still interesting to see something like this from up above!

this was just before landing at San Francisco Airport last Wednesday.

This was taken shortly after we left Chicago on Wednesday June 6. Strange patterns on the landscape though. Had an uneventful flight thru to San Francisco, but I certainly took a lot of photos.

24 hours in Chicago.......

Chicago.......the windy city, the VERY windy city!!!

But the architecture is quite amazing.......you need more than 24 hours to wander around Chicago and take in all the beautiful buildings.

In particular, The Chicago Tribune building called Tribune Tower.

www.aviewoncities.com/chicago/tribunetower.htm

The Tribune Tower is a neo-gothic skyscraper located at a prominent site near the Michigan Avenue Bridge in Chicago. The Tribune Tower was completed in 1925 and reaches a height of 141 meters.

An interesting fact is that the Tribune Tower contains many famous stones incorporated in the wall, including rock fragments from the Alamo, the Colosseum and the Chinese Wall. A steel fragment from the World Trade Center in New York is also added to the wall. All these objects are labeled and visible from the street level. The most famous part of the collection is a moon rock which is not incorporated in the building but on display.

Read all about this building here:

I shall look forward to returning to this city, but in warmer weather!!

Singapore to New York ......

Well, what can I say???
It was eventful to say the least ........... on arrival at Changi Airport at 5.30am on Saturday June 2 we were told the flight had been delayed for at least 3 hours!
They offered to put us on another flight, to which we agreed....using ANA (All Nipon Air) leaving half an hour later than our original flight was expected to.
That meant we would have just on 30 mins to get from terminal one to Terminal two at Tokyo, plus seat allocation, boarding pass etc....
Flight was great...attendants were amazingly helpful and very friendly.
Service was excellent.
Arrived Tokyo and boarded American Airlines for New York after a mad rush to get to the departure gate. The plane was waiting and we were last on.

Then the drama's really started.

I took ill with Food Poisoning 6 hours into the AA flight to New York. This was very unpleasant and I will not go into details other than to say that it was far easier for all concerned to have me in the bathroom area of the plane and this is where I stayed for 3 hours wrapped in blankets as I was so cold. The Air Crew on this flight were so very helpful .......cannot stress enough as to how helpful they were. ...and the drama's did not end there either!

A white 'powder substance' was located in a cellophane cutlery bag in the economy section. The couple that were effected had to be kept away from everyone else in case of 'possible' contamination.

See photos below of the drama's unfolding after our arrival at JFK...

Again, air crew were on the ball and responded quickly, quietly and efficiently.

To cut a very long story short, on arrival at JFK (New York) airport the plane had to taxi to a remote area where there were fire brigade, police, FBI, Medical Dept etc waiting.....they came on board in full gear to 'test' this powder while all passengers had to wait for over 3 hours , and after a 13 hour flight this was not pleasant for anyone!

soon given the all clear and this was after I also was checked by medical staff. They had already organised an ambulance and wheel chair, which I declined as I felt I was able to walk to customs 'under my own steam'. In hindsight, this was foolish ..... but at the time all I wanted to do was 'get the hell outa there'.

The situation at JFK was even more worrying due to the arrest of 4 Terrorists that had planned on blowing up the Fuel Lines at JFK ...... this all was happening just prior to our arrival.....hence the added security of police, FBI, and associated teams!!

We arrived at the Sheraton Manhattan Hotel at 11.00pm ........ six hours later than first expected. After a nice long hot shower we went for a bit of a wander before going to bed at about 1.30am after a long (24 hour) flight with all the associated drama's!!

Now here in New York for 3 days, leaving for Chicago on Tuesday morning.......

waiting at the airport ......

hope this is not a sign of things to come ....

arrived at Changi Airport at 5.30am only to be told "due to a maintenence problem" our flight has been delayed by 3 hours!!

well I am not going to get in the way of any "maintenence problem", so asked to be put on another flight ........ and the only one available that had two seats in First / Business Class was NIPON AIR. So I hope I don't have to get out there on the runway and start pushing!!!

But the staff are very nice (thats a help) and have put us in the VIP lounge ....... whose complaining???

Have Internet access, spa, massage, coffee, papers, food and even scotch (at 5.30am??) But being given the Royal Treatment is a treat. Love it. :-)))

Flight now leaves for Tokyo at 8.30am, which will only give us a 30 min transfer time for the flight to New York. I think we might need to put our skates on ....

stay tuned!!!

3.30am Saturday June 2.....

have just got up 'cos I have to get showered and dressed as we are flying off to Tokyo this morning.....!!!

well Tokyo is (unfortunately) just a stop over on our way to New York City.

But we are flying Japan Airlines Business Class and this is a first time for me, so am anxious to experience how the 'other half live' ........ you know, sitting back there in cattle class and you see the Stewards going thru THE curtain to Business Class and you wonder....... what it is like flying Business Class!

Well I am about to find out.

But not only that.....once we are on American Airlines, we are in First Class!!

We fly to New York for 3 days, then to Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas and Austin before arriving back here in Singapore on June 16.

Stay 'posted' for my comments on being pampered!!

(I hope I am not going to be too disappointed!!)

I may get a chance to upload some photos while away and if I do they will be on the Flickr site:
