my Pokey Boy

January 02 1997  -  July 07 2011

memories of Pokey

a very special friend - July 7 2011

I lost a special friend today
the kind you can't replace,
and looking at his empty bed
I still can see his happy face.

I see the endless energy
the sparkling puppy eyes,
Not the tired, fragile friend
I had to bid goodbye.

I know he's in a special place
our Lord has for such friends,
Where meadows, fields & flowers
help make them strong and whole again.

I remember how he'd run to me
to play his favorite puppy game,
And how his ears would perk right up
When he heard me call his name.

But as those precious years went by
And we both aged and grew,
I'd find him often slowing down
But-we had still so much to do.

He did his guard dog duty well
Each time the doorbell rang,
Strangers surely couldn't see
My gentle friend--behind those fangs.

I've noticed in the recent times
His ears were not as sharp,
Where is that running ball of fur
The years have shown their mark.

He started sleeping next to me
Was this his special clue,
Because he felt the end was near
I only wish I knew.

My POKEY BOY was a special dog
I know he gave his best,
But as I looked deep into his eyes
I knew it was time, for him to rest.

It will truly be a struggle
I don't know how I'll face each day,
I have to let him go--I know
But in my heart he'll always stay.

This special place our Lord has made
Health and strength, wait for him there,
So with my very special friend
I'm sending all my prayers.

I know he's watching over me
he'll be with me when I cry,
So with one more kiss on his beloved head
I told my POKEY BOY goodbye.

Pokey with me on Tuesday (July 5 2011)

Pokey and Oscar together in Singapore

and "the Pokey little puppy" when he was 3 mths old.

today he was 14.5 years of age

he was truly a loving dog, very gentle and caring in lots of ways,
when his brother Oscar had a  sore eye,
Pokey would come and lick the eye, "to kiss it better"
when he found me crying one day,
he ran inside and jumped up on my lap and licked my tears away.
He was sensitive to everything around him and did not like the thunderstorms here in Singapore one little bit. He could climb up top of a 6 ' book case, onto my desk and pull down all the books, or into the bathroom sink, anything to get away from the noise!!

He loved carrots, cheese and sardines best of all.

He also loved to chase the lizards all over the backyard at Blackwood or the
crabs amongst the rocks on the beachs of Australia.

but he loved his "family" most of all, even Zac (Janines dog who passed away in Jan 2009) and he knew them all by name, be it Yvonne, Graeme, Julie, Ronnie, Janine,
he knew all the names and who they belonged to.

but we loved him most of all

and we will miss him dearly

XXOOXX

Thanks to Dr Jennifer at The Animal Clinic

for all the care she gave to Pokey.

I thought I could hold it but after reading your last words to Pokey, tears stream down like a river.

M and I just got back from a weekend away and we're so very sorry to hear about the sad passing of wee Pokey. The photo's you posted are lovely especially the one of Pokey on the beach only 3 mths old and what a beautiful poem. It must have been hard to write. It brought tears to our eyes just reading it.
We had so much fun looking after Oscar & Pokey and still laugh when remembering their little quirks.
We also still have pangs of guilt about the paw print incident. The look on poor Pokey's face - and then the look on your face when we owned up to our naughty deed.
Love to yourself, John and Oscar. xxx
